Circle This Date, Mark This Hour!

Circle This Date, Mark This Hour!

Now that we have sprung our clocks ahead to Daylight Saving Time; circle this date March 27th, 2010, mark this hour 8:30 p.m..
Why you ask? To honour our planet by turning off our lights, reducing our power usage for Earth Hour 2010!

Join this powerful force of more than 92 countries participating in Earth Hour.  For the second year in a row even casinos in Las Vegas will go dark for that hour.  According to managing director Leslie Aun, when Las Vegas signed on in 2009, it put Earth Hour on the map!

Back home, our Toronto Hydro has brought back it's How Low Can We Go T.O.? contest.
You can check it out and enter here. From now until March 27th, 2010 our local newspaper The Toronto Star will be running daily tips to reduce our carbon footprint.

Picture of Earth

What can we do to preserve this beautiful place called Earth?

Not just on March 27, 2010, not just from 8:30 to 9:30, but every single day. Can't we use reusable shopping bags, completely turn off our computers and printers at the end of the day, leave the lights off longer, turn the air conditioners up a notch or two, the furnaces down the same notches? We've been taking our reusuable bags to the stores, trying hard to unplug plugs from walls when not in use, recycling as much as possible, using timers on our lights and a programmable thermostat. It does take a conceinous effort. We know we can do more.

Remember that saying? "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", it's needed down here, it's needed now.

Time change - spring ahead

It's Time To Spring Ahead

Picture of a man chasing time.

Can you believe it's here already, that time of year when we turn the clocks ahead and jump one hour closer to Spring?
Well we are happy about getting closer to Spring, but not about losing on full hour of sleep!  How do we get ahead and lose all at once like that?

Daylight Saving Time, arrives tonight.
There are benefits to the extra hour of 'awake' time, more time to cross things off the to do list, some will now be able to get in a round of golf before work, have more Active Rain time, an extra hour of exercise time, ok, maybe not that much, but there is so much we can achieve with an extra hour.

What will you do?
Whatever it is, enjoy and don't forget to set the clocks ahead tonight to avoid confusion tomorrow!

Remember, if you snooze you lose. Oh that's right, we lost already didn't we; we lost that hour of sleep!

Things you always wanted to know about the Giraffe:

The Giraffe is from Africa
and is the tallest living land animal and could reach 20 feet and weigh in at as much as 3,960 pounds.

It's population has been reducing since the 1800's by humans hunting them for their meat, tough hides and tail hairs.

Their tongues can exceed 18 inches.

They exceptionally good eyesight, can run up to 35 mph and spend 16-20 hours a day feeding and sleeping for only 5-30 minutes a day.

Thanks for your guesses, Pam McInnes of Peak Realty Ltd. from Waterloo, Ontario nailed it.  We heard she flipped a coin... heads or tails and tails won it.  Way to go Pam.

Happy Birthday to Toronto, Ontario, Canada!

Russel Ray post this amazing insight into our wonderful City as a celebration tribute to Toronto Canada's 176th birthday.  Thank you Russel, you did an outstanding job!

We disabled the comments here, please go straight over and give credit to the man who deserves it!

Thank you again Russel

Al and Peggy

Via Russel Ray, San Diego Marketing & Business Consultant (Russel Ray):

My owner is a Marketing & Business Consultant in San DiegoI haven't been to visit the blogs of all my Canadian friends today to see if they are celebrating Toronto's birthday, but I would be remiss in my duties if I didn't wish Toronto a Happy Birthday from down here in sunny San Diego.

On this date in 1834, York, Canada was incorporated as Toronto, making Toronto a whopping 176 years old. She still looks good, though!

Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Toronto is Canada's largest city with over 2½ million people, and the fifth most populous city in North America.

Other interesting facts about Toronto:

  1. CN Tower, Toronto, Ontario, CanadaUntil recently, the CN Tower was the tallest free-standing structure in the world at 1,815 feet 5 inches 553.33 meters metres tall. If you ever get a chance to go to Toronto, don't miss going to the CN Tower observation deck where you can stand on glass and look down to the ground; not for those afraid of heights. The letters CN don't stand for anything anymore, but originally they stood for Canadian National, the railway company that built the tower. Visit in the Spring and you'll see a fantastic display of tulips and daffodils on the grounds surrounding the CN Tower.
  2. Toronto is the heart of the Golden Horseshoe in southern Ontario, an area that has 8.1 million people, about 25% of Canada's population.
  3. The Toronto Stock Exchange is the world's seventh largest.
  4. About 49% of Toronto's residents were born outside of Canada.
  5. Residents of Toronto are called Torontonians.

  7. Toronto covers 243 square miles 630 square kilometers kilometres.
  8. Also visit Scarborough Bluffs, beautiful escarpments from the last ice age.
  9. Toronto ranks second in North America to New York City with the most buildings over 300 feet 90 meters metres tall.
  10. Just Married in TorontoPride Week for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender community is one of the largest celebrations in the world, attracting over one million visitors each year.
  11. The Distillery District was once the largest alcohol processing center centre in North America and still has the best collection of Victorian industrial architecture.
  12. Ontario Place has the world's first permanent IMAX theater theatre.
  13. Main entrance to the Toronto ZooThe Toronto Zoo is one of the largest in the world with over 5,000 animals representing 460 species, yet we still can't get our Canadian friends to go to the Zoo and take lots of pictures to share with us. Go figure.
  14. Have some shopping to do? Visit Toronto Eaton Center Centre. Fine, fine, fine. It's also considered a tourist attraction, with over 52 million visitors each year saying they "toured" the Center Centre.
  15. The Canada National Exhibition is the oldest annual fair in the world, and the fifth largest in North America.
  16. Toronto is the only Canadian city with representation in five major league sports: National Hockey League, Major League Baseball, National Basketball Association, Canadian Football League, and Major League Soccer.

Moose Monday - Is This All There Is To Eat

Moose Monday - Is This All There Is To Eat

Hello Active Rain Moose Lovers,

Another Moose Monday is upon us.
We didn't want to let Gerry from Red Lodge Montana down, so we took a trip to the Toronto Zoo yesterday in search of Bullwinkle a Moose.  Now you have to know that the Moose headquarters is the farthest from the entrance of the zoo.  At the bottom of a huge hill that was tough even going down, yes we were puffing going back of the hill.

So anyway, here we are trying to get a couple of shots of the Moose
, the Blackberry dingalings and would you believe it, it's Gerry making a comment on one of our blogs.  Is that some kind of psycho communication or what.  We had always heard if someone pops into your mind... call them or do a blog to their group Moose Mondays.

We got a picture of this youngster and thought it was a good one to share with you...

A young Moose trying to get some grass to eat.

A little Moose trivia... the name "Moose" means "eater of twigs" in the Algonkian language and "Elk" is the european name for a Moose.
