Today Was A Very Stressful Day...

Today was a very stressful day in the Al and Peggy Cunningham household.  No, not because of the weather.  No, not because of our real estate business.  No, not because of the anticipated men's Olympic hockey game. Today was stressful because the littlest one in our family was diagnosed as critically ill.

The littlest one in our family weighs only 4.3 kg according to the doctor and he is our beloved Siamese cat, Joey.  Anyone who doesn't have a ball of fur in their family just may not understand our feelings, but let us explain.  We spotted little, what we thought were drops of water on the floor, in various spots, only to discover they were pinkish coloured drops of water.  Without, going into detail, we realized that our smallest Siamese was the source and he had a problem.

The vet told us our poor little guy had a 'blockage' in his urinary track and a dangerously enlarged bladder that was life threatening.
He canceled his other appointments and took our little Joey into surgery immediately.

Returning home, we found Simon, Joey's brother, sitting in the hall waiting for everyone
and has since been searching the house for his sibling. You see, they have never been separated before.

Two hours later, we were relieved to be told they had removed the blockage from our little guy and he is resting, albeit with a catheter, and would have to remain under the watchful eyes of a doctor for the next 48 hours.

Yes, its been a stressful day, but now we will sleep well tonight, well maybe not poor Joey.

The Polar Bear

Polar bears are considered the largest land carnivores in the world, matched only by very large individual Kodiak brown bears. Both sexes differ in size throughout their range; males being much larger than females and continuing to grow for a longer period of time. These bears have long, massive skulls, necks and bodies with long legs and large paws. The tongue is black and the eyes brown. The surface of the skin is also black. Fur colour varies slightly with the season.  Male polar bears weigh between 400 – 600 kg, and have been recorded up to a maximum of 800 kg. Females are smaller than the males weighing up to 300 kg, and when pregnant up to 460 kg. Polar bears are 2.5 – 3.5 m long.

You will find the polar bear in all Arctic seas and coastlines. The Alaskan coast north of Bering Strait, off the coasts of Greenland and along the Eurasian Arctic coast from Spitsbergen to Wrangell Island. Rare stragglers reach Iceland. In Canada, they are found along the Arctic coasts from Alaska to Labrador and from the tip of James Bay to northern Ellesmere Island. Polar bears do roam as far as 150 kilometres inland into the coniferous forests, where they live very differently from the polar bears which belong to the high Arctic.

The ringed seal is by far the most common prey of the Polar Bear. They also eat bearded seal, harp seal and hooded seal. Young walrus are sometimes taken. During the summer months they feed upon the shoreline carrion, fish, mussels, crabs, starfish, lemmings and the eggs and nestling young of waterfowl and cliff-dwelling birds. They will also graze on kelp, grasses and eat mushrooms and crowberries.

Normally they are solitary animals outside the breeding season, the exception being a mother with cubs. Polar bears mate in mid-summer. They give birth to one to four cubs somewhere between late November and early January.

A Little Competition Is Always Good... Better Arrive With Your "A" Game

Hello Active Rain

Isn't it funny how a little rivalry gets everybody going.  It's just a hockey game.  Of course we have to cheer for Canada, we also have to thank the United States team for waking up our team.

Since their loss to the US, Canada went on to beat the Germans and Russia.

We have our fingers crossed that Canada and the US will make to the final game on Sunday for the Gold Medal.  That will be a game to see... North America can't lose.

The Artic Wolves - See Them At The Toronto Zoo, Toronto Ontario

The Artic Wolves - See Them At The Toronto Zoo, Toronto Ontario

The Artic Wolf

Arctic Wolves have white fur year-round which allows them to blend into their snowy surroundings. Their coat is long and silky with soft, thick under fur. This is shed in the spring and the coat becomes shorter and less dense.  The forefeet have five toes and the hind feet have four. The Artic Wolf is a subspecies of the gray wolf.  Male Arctic wolves generally weigh between 34 - 46 kg, and females between 36 - 38 kg.

The Artic Wolves lives primarily in the Arctic, the region located above 67 degrees north latitude. This is the area along the northern edge of the North American continent and northward to the North Pole, as well as along the eastern and northern shores of Greenland.  The land in the Arctic is covered with snow and ice for most of the year except for brief periods during the summer months. Due to scarcity of grazing plants and resulting low density of prey species, wolves roam over large areas hunting for food.

The Artic Wolves are predatory carnivores. They hunt in packs for caribou and musk-oxen. They also consume Arctic hares, ptarmigan, lemmings, and other small animals including nesting birds.

The Artic Wolves live in groups of seven to ten individuals. There is a highly complex social order within wolf packs and each pack has a dominant male and female, who bond for life. Mating between the pair takes place during the breeding season of January through to March.

Wolves communicate with each other in a variety of ways. Clear communication is a key element to the success of a cooperative pack.  Body language in tail and ear positions, of body and head angle, making and breaking eye contact, and facial expressions are just a few. Wolves howl for many reasons, to assemble the pack before and after hunts, to locate members of the pack over distances, to warn neighboring packs of their presence, and apparently just for the fun of it. They often howl at a rendezvous site. The wolf's howl can be heard up to 5 km away. They use scent marking to communicate their presence and territory boundaries to other wolves. This can be either urine or feces left on rocks and snow banks along their hunting trails. Wolves have a very good sense of smell. They can detect prey 1.6 km away and can sense an animal three days after it has gone.

Changes Are Coming Into Effect for Canadian Mortgage Insurance Rules effective April 19, 2010

Our Canadian Federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty
made an announcement this week advising of prudent changes to mortgage insurance rules intended to come into effect April 19, 2010.  Canadian Association of Accredited Mortgage Professions, CAAMP, were actively involved in the discussions of these changes as well.

The Federal Finance Minister said "the government is taking proactive, prudent and cautious steps to prevent a housing bubble."

These pro active steps will be as follows
:

1.  All borrowers must meet the standards for a 5 year fixed rate mortgage regardless if they choose a mortgage with a lower interest rate and shorter term
2.  The maximum withdrawal amount in the refinancing of a mortgage will be reduced to 90% from the current 95% of the value of the property.
3.  Non-Owner occupied properties will require a minimum down payment of 20%.

Further to these changes by the Federal Finance Minister, Canada Mortgage Housing Corporation, CMHC
, is expected to change the TDS (total debt service ratio) formula on rental properties whether Owner occupied or not allowing 50% of the gross rental income to be included in the borrowers gross annual income.

These changes will come into effect April 19, 2010

New Year's Resolutions... Broken Promises! Are You In That Boat?

New Year's Resolutions... Broken Promises!  Are You In That Boat?

Hello Active Rain and Friends,

Did you make yourself a promise to lose weight or just to get into shape this year.  How's it going?

Like millions we climbed aboard the "Good Ship Lose Some Pounds".  The problem is the ship keeps coming into port, you know, you wake up and think... "I can't do this today".

We try to get up every morning, Al on the recumbent bike and Peggy on the treadmill.  Depending on the tension on the bike or the incline on the treadmill will determine how long you go.  We are up to 32 minutes a day.  Don't worry about the time, we heard recently anything over 42 minutes is a waste.  So don't use time as your excuse for not exercising.

We like to use a music video to keep us in step or stride depending on your type of exercising.

Now, we have never had any formal training in weight loss or getting into shape but can tell you that over the years we have lost hundreds of pounds... only problem is they came back and brought some friends.  It always seems the friends are growing faster than our Facebook page.

Here is a great video to watch as you exercise, some of you will remember Meat Loaf... he is truly a great singer and performer.  You may have to search to find this video but it is well worth the $25-30 it will cost.

Cover of Video of Meat Loaf - Live with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra

We found this short commercial for GoPhone that will bring back memories to you, who Meat Loaf is, have a listen.
