The ONE Thing Challenge: Focusing On One Key Thing
We took the challenge and downloaded the three sample chapters from the 'The One Thing' book. The first thing I noticed was that it was impossible to settle on just one chapter to discuss.
I was nodding in agreement all the way through the three chapters, feeling like a bobble head! Although I was taken back to find out in Chapter 5 that multi-tasking is a lie and that even though we can do two things at once, we can't focus on two things at once and that it actually takes longer to accomplish things when we multi-task because that's when mistakes happen. No wonder I always feel like I have worked so hard and accomplished nothing!
Chapter 7 teaches us to pay attention & respect our willpower. I could relate to that chapter too and can now see how we use up our willpower throughout the day and then we fall back on our default settings. No wonder I can't battle those sugar cravings late in the day.
However, it was chapter 1 that took me by storm. I loved the analogy to be like a postage stamp and stick to one thing until you get there. The light bulb went off in my head and I thought 'Doesn't that just make sense?' Why have I been unconsciously fighting this? Why am I always running helter skelter looking for the new and improved and switching gears mid stream?
Chapter 1 also was about learning to 'go small'. What? I thought we were supposed 'go big or go home?' They stated in the chapter that going small is ignoring all the things you could do and doing what you should do. It went on to say that doing fewer things is more effective! This chapter taught me that when we go small, we'll be staring at one thing and that was the point! It was right around here, reading this chapter that the light bulb clicked on. It all made so much sense.
I have to quote from the book once again because it had such an impact. It reminded us about the movie City Slickers, but I had forgotten the part the book quoted when Curly was saying the secret to life is just one thing. When asked what that one thing was, Curly replied "that one thing is whatever you figure out is important to you."
We hope you take this challenge and read these chapters or better still the whole book. We hope you sit quiet and choose Your One Thing.
