Al and Peggy's Corner: Getting Hosed Again

Getting Hosed Again

Good Morning Active Rain,

Well, they are at it again.  Over the past month or so we have been getting our gas in the range of 85¢ for a litre of regular gas.  Yesterday they were back just over $1.00 for a litre.

We know, what's a litre?  A litre is a way to get more money out of your pocket.  We used to buy our gas by the gallon.  Now there is about 4 litres in a gallon which would calculate to $4.00 per gallon.

Doesn't $1 sound better than $4, hence the change to litres.  They think we are stupid and would never notice... Governments!!!

To put it into perspective for you.  When we are about empty, it costs about $65-70 to fill up the tank, during our drive to Myrtle Beach when we stopped to fill up, it usually cost $35-40 to fill up.

I noticed that gas prices had been lower...in New Mexico I paid $2.39/gallon on my road trip earlier this month....then back in California it was $3.05....ridiculous.

Wow!! That's pricey!!  I believe I saw $2.45/gallon here on Sunday.  Guess we should count our blessings down here!

Good point.  It is kinda the same idea as slowly boiling the frog by gradually heating the water.

Nice to see some fellow Canadians blogging! Over in Nova Scotia, we have gas regulation so it only changes price every Friday - so Thursday is crazy to get gas if it's "going up".

Hey guys, I still but gas by the gallon. In the past two weeks it  has gone up almost 20 cents per gallon. We are  now sitting at $2.74/gallon.

Posted by Ian Niquette (Square One Home Inspection) over 2 years ago

Crazy eh Ann?  What's causing it this time, we have stopped listening to the news!

Ouch Karen! You are almost paying as much as us, but on your bright side, you get more! :)

Better filler up quick Sonja, increases are probably on their way  to you!

LOL Lester, great analogy!

Hellooooo Beautiful Nova Scotia! At least with that regulation, you know when you are going to get hosed ahead of time!

Hey Ian, hope that price holds for you for awhile. We were paying on average $2.16 when we were in Myrtle Beach for your HUGE gallon!

Al & Peggy, Gas is about $2.79 a gallon here and when it was over $3.50 a gallon, we really felt it, especially living 22 miles outside of town.

Hi Al & Peggy, we are currently at $2.70 per gallon, and at our worst we were at $4.10 per gallon. The upward creep will be a factor across the country as the refiners will begin to claim that more oil needs to be processed for heating and that will create a shortage for fuel. It's amazing how the oil companies can actually get us to buy that swamp land.

Al & Peggy - Rising gasoline prices pose a significant danger to the recovery, and the frustrating part is; there's no shortage of oil--we actually have somewhat of a surplus.  A weak dollar has driven more to commodities and that means more expensive oil. When oil prices go up, the oil companies use that as an excuse to raise the price of gasoline. I suspect oil will remain at the current level or even rise as we go into next spring.

Ewww that would be a long walk Wanda! 22 miles???

Ahh, they always have an answer don't they Ed? Swamp land, always ready to buy! LOL

So there is the answer then also John....our dollar was getting close to par with you, wasn't it!

We're up to $2.79 a gallon as of today's increase and it take me about $65.00 to fill my truck. Guess the next time I want to complain about the cost of gas I'll remember my friends across the border have it worse.

Hi Al and Peggy - I liked it better in the "old days" which were about a year or so ago.  Before that time, gas prices would jump at midnight by up to 10 cents a litre and gradually fall until evening on many days of the week.  Thus, many people would line up at night.

Unfortunately, there was a big fire at one of the Sarnia refineries where much of the Toronto area gas is refined and the gas companies stopped the volatile fluctuation.  Now gas prices tend to be very stable.

Al and Peggy a dollar might sound better than four, but the final total is scary no matter how they state it.

Hi, it was up to $101.2 today.  We were in Stratford last Thursday and it was 88 cents/litre.  My daughter wants to go shopping in Niagara Falls, NY on Thurs. so I will fill up there.

Al & Peggy,

I will participate in this gas survey.  I just filled my tank just yesterday in Laurel (42 miles North of Red Lodge) and it was $2.51 a gallon there.  It just seems that gas is about 10 cents per gallon cheaper in Laurel compared to Red Lodge and I make it a habit to fill up my tank every time I am in Laurel.

Posted by Gerry Khatchikian, ASA, TRC, SFR over 2 years ago

Suesan, that is quite alot per gallon as well!...we are running at around $65.00 when our little car is dry though!

So that's what changed the midnight runs!

You got that right George! and they try and make us feel better by telling us it is a tax deduction!

Yep fill it up on the American side for sure Jenny...., BTW, mid Thursday I will be drooling

Definitely worth it to fill in Laurel Gerry.  Maybe the price fixing wasn't so bad after all.

Gas is falling out here right now. A couple of weeks ago it was $3.299. It's down to $2.839 now. That's per gallon, of course.

Sixteen years ago when my wife and I went on our honeymoon in Canada, we figured the same thing out and were pretty upset as to how you guys gamed the system to make it look better than it did in the states.

Expatriating could be an option, but the rest of the world is more screwed than we are.

Ouch that is costly. The prices of gas is so ridiculous. We all need to buy mopeds, but how do I get a client to a home on it?

Posted by Chip Jefferson (Gibbs Realty and Auction Company) over 2 years ago

Wow, that is pricey! We are at $2.69 a gallon here and climbing. Bought a Prius and am so glad we did. Getting 45-47 mpg and lots of leg room in the back!

In Brazil the gas is sold by liter. but we have the option of alcohol (etanol) and it is cheaper

Posted by Gabriela Agostinelli (Century 21 New Millennium) over 2 years ago

I'll take Gabriela's alcohol.  Course my version of alcohol is even more expensive than gas and you don't feel so good if you use a whole gallon in one day!

Gas, one of the only things you can't really do without.  Gotta get to the property to inspect it and my ladder is way to heavy to carry on my bicycle!
