MUST READ" Your Life Could Depend On It!
Almost everyone here on Active Rain, Realtors, Home Inspectors, Stagers, Mortgage Brokers, as part of their day to day business go into people's houses. We never know what to expect or what we will find.
A couple of days ago there was an article in the Toronto Sun (one of Toronto's daily newspapers), about the Police attending to a noise complaint. On speaking with the complainant they noticed an aquarium with a snake it. This turned out to be not just any old snake.
The snake was an African Gaboon viper, a little over three feet long. This little guy is one of the most deadly snakes in Africa. It can grow up to 7 feet long and weigh up to 18 pounds. Rodney Southern wrote a great article about this snake and is worth the few minutes it takes to read it. See article here.
We hope this article will remind you to keep your hands in your pockets, don't reach out to see the cute little snake or dog or bird, until you know what you are about to get in return.
Look at this cute little guy

Hm man, I've yet to meet a snake in all these years of showing houses - and I'd probably have a bird -whether it was in an aquarium/terrarium or whatever!.
That owner seems to be thoughtlessly exposing all of North America to a new breed of problem.
Al & Peggy, The old addage, "Look but don't touch" comes to mind regarding this type of situation or better yet, "Run, Forest, RUN! Yikes!
Liz, in some basements we have been in, we always wondered what was hiding in there.
Agree with you 100% Heath, this is a great way of spreading disease.
Yes Wanda and another one is 'watch that snake in the grass'
I showed a house a few years back that had 6, yes 6, different snakes in different cages through out the house. The listing agent did put this information in the MLS remarks, so we were prepared, it was still kind of unsettling though.
We used to keep a red-tailed boa constrictor in our maintenance shop years ago ... it was big but not venomous, but you always do have to be careful!
Walter, even if on the listing, don't think snakes are condusive to showings....
Pet snake Richard, interesting.. and yes you have to be careful.
Hi Al & Peggy ~ The head on the snake alone looks pretty scary!
That's a bit scary! I don't think I'd want to get anywhere close to that guy.
alongHowdy and Mornen Al and Peggy
Did the complainant legally have that there snake? Over the years, I have came alone many of a venomous snakes in crawl spaces. Meet up with alot of them back home, but so far I have not came along any in this area.
Al and Peggy - I know the perfect home for him. The Africa building at the Toronto Zoo.
Isn't it Melinda! It can kill a human in minutes...scary, and someone had it in their house!
Can't even imagine being near that thing out in the open Irene.
No he didn't Dale and the article says he will be charged with having it. This is a scary snake, it lies on the forest ground just waiting for someone or something to step near or on him and then that's the last step taken, this guy takes them out!
Yes, Marc and that is the only place it should be, even if it is just a little guy!
So what exactly happened? The cop saw the snake...and knew what it was? Thank goodness it was discovered!! Wow!
I'm pretty much a scaredy cat when it comes to snakes, bees, wasps, big dogs, etc. Now my husband, well, he's a totally different story. I'm surprised he hasn't been here to see you viper.
