Circle This Date, Mark This Hour!
Now that we have sprung our clocks ahead to Daylight Saving Time; circle this date March 27th, 2010, mark this hour 8:30 p.m.. Why you ask? To honour our planet by turning off our lights, reducing our power usage for Earth Hour 2010!
Join this powerful force of more than 92 countries participating in Earth Hour. For the second year in a row even casinos in Las Vegas will go dark for that hour. According to managing director Leslie Aun, when Las Vegas signed on in 2009, it put Earth Hour on the map!
Back home, our Toronto Hydro has brought back it's How Low Can We Go T.O.? contest. You can check it out and enter here. From now until March 27th, 2010 our local newspaper The Toronto Star will be running daily tips to reduce our carbon footprint.

What can we do to preserve this beautiful place called Earth?
Remember that saying? "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind", it's needed down here, it's needed now.

Love the St Patty's Day Hat.
The date has been set in my blackberry. I will be taking part and doing my little bit to help.
LOL you beat me. I started a post on this very subject a couple days ago but never finished it. Yes we could certainly do all the above. I try to do my part by only boiling enough water for one cup of coffee. For me of course. Then my husband comes along and gets mad because he says I never put enough water in the kettle. Can't win.
Al and Peggy.. Thank you for letting me know. I knew it was coming around again.. just didn't know what day.
Every year my son and I turn off all the lights, heat and hotwater. We *walk* not use our car and go out to dinner. We have come to make this a tradition.. who would ever have thought, trying to safe the Earth would turn into a family memory.
Al & Peggy, I've got the date and we do need to do our part to reduce energy use. Thanks for passing along the message!
Al & Peggy - I think it's awesome that Las Vegas participates.
I love my reusable shopping bags, although I do forget them occasionally, but I make sure to recycle the plastic bags I get.
Al & Peggy, thank you for reminding me. Will it count if I unplug my laptop and use it on battery power? Or is that cheating?
Seriously, I try my best. And I will do better, how is that?
I love turning off the lights. It's fun. And, it helps. The statistics from last year were great! I just wish it was slightly BEFORE DST kicks in. And, thanks for the invitation to Russel's party!
Al and Peggy I don't know ............ No TV ........... NO Computer ............ hummmmmmmmm I don't know. I am going through withdrawal just thinking about it :) :)
Thank you Kim!
That's great Laura, just don't charge that blackberry during that hour LOL
Great minds think alike Jenny, we just didn't stop to boil water LOL!
That's a great story Valerie and a very nice family tradition. We know we were confused last year which day it was on.
No problem Wanda, its for a great cause. Every little bit helps.
It must be a sight to see the Las Vegas strip with the lights out although one article said they 'dimmed' them, so not certain which in fact it is.
That's just great Andrea. No we don't think its cheating if you use battery power, we understand withdrawals! LOL!
Suzanne low lights are always more cozier. We do have alot on that we don't need, will have to correct that this year.
Can just imagine you George in withdrawals. Hope its not a 'game' night....oh dear its a Saturday night! Uh-oh
Hey kids, here's the scenario. Just me and the missus alone at home at 8:25 pm. I excuse myself and come back in a couple of minutes and the power is out. I get close to the missus and start to get 'frisky'. She gives me a whack and tells me to go find out what the problem is. I tell her it's to save the earth and she tells me that she hasn't heard that line in ages and it isn't going to work now either.
Wow!!! I can't believe that Vegas will shut down for an hour. I probably will be at some time when no one is gaming...
We have shut down on the northeast - we had such a storm, and lost all power now for three days, and will probably continue for another 3 days! I finally got out of our street this afternoon, so I could pick up a radon test at a house, and check some basements for my buyers. All basements in this area are flooded. Great time to check them all.....
I'm all for less usage - use the fireplace and candles a little more~
Al and Peggy,
We all need to reduce our energy consumption...

I remember when we used to have Earth Week. That was way back when I was a sophomore in high school in 1971. Then we went to Earth Day in the late '70s or early '80s. Now we're down to Earth Hour. Pretty soon we'll be even too busy for that. Earth Minute here we come!
Thanks for the reminder....I'll have to notify our friends that are having a party on that day, "Lights out!". I wonder what they'll do? I have a feeling it will get a little crazy....with the all lights turned off! ;)
