Al and Peggy's Corner: Watch Out For The Pesticide Police...

Hi Al & Peggy, Pesticide Police huh? Well, how about that! You can always add those suckers to a salad! I don't mind them really, I don't like pesticides or herbicides, however I admit having to use them on the wasps that move in.

Yup, pesticide police. That is why we had to buy one of those handy dandy weed tool. Takes alot of bending and its hard on the hands, but it must be done or our grass will be a sea of yellow instead of green! Have never tried them in a salad Andrea.......... 

Al and Peggy - You'll be needing a lot more time over the next few years since your neighbours' dandelions will have lots of seeds that will drift onto your property.  Happy weeding!!! ;)

Al & Peggy, dandelion greens are wonderful in salads, in soups you name it. They are the new up and coming greens. We use those and Kale in alot of dishes and they say that the vitimin/antioxident content for both is great. On the other hand, stay away from those bees...

LOL Michael, gotta a tell you, we saw a big huge one this weekend, bee that is.

Not into dandelions so much Gerry, now the honey from the bees............. 

 

Having lived in Beeton, so named because of the Bees that were farmed here originally... I appreciate the Bees and can live with the dandelions.  Have never used them myself, but know of people that make wine and use the greens in salads...

I like dandelions and have always thought they were pretty - yes, I've been called strange before.

And I'd much rather know that our land isn't being poisoned by chemicals, just to preserve what society deems as the "perfect lawn".

Hey guys, mine lawn is pretty spared but I am also out there on a regular basis with the tools and a bucket getting them out. We do have one neighbor that doesn't do much of anything to their lawn, including only occasionally cutting it. They provide the fodder for everyone elses' problems, could be time for a midnight raid.

Al & Peggy, I'm all for getting rid of or at least regulating in some way the use of pesticides.  I have a private well at my house in Illinois so it is a concern to me.

That movie looks hilarious!  As for pesticides they are bad bad bad!

I dislike dandelions but my stranger than strange husband thinks they are "bee-U-tee-ful."

What really bugs me is that supposedly intelligent people don't know the difference between pesticides and insecticides. They say: "herbicides and pesticides". They are repeating themselves, because herbicides are pesticides. Pesticides is a general category including all the "cides": herbicides, insecticides, rodenticides, fungicides and algaecides. I don't understand while people get so many dandelions. I don't have any right now. I think I had two or three tiny ones since April on my front lawn and none in my backyard. It took me literally seconds to pull them out. There are very few dandelions in my suburban neighbourhood of Ottawa. To keep dandelions from coming back after you pull them out, make sure that your turf is tight: 1) overseed 2) topdress with soil and fertilizer; 3) don't cut too short-- leave 3 inches 4) don't remove clippings--they add nitrogen and 5) add Dutch clover seeds--keeps turf moist and adds nitrogen. Dutch clover is really nice and no more a weed than grass is. Did you know that grass is a type of weed?
