They Are Hoping For A Peaceful Protest In The City Of Brampton, Ontario, Canada's Heart Lake Community

Nestled to the north end of the City of Brampton, Ontario, Canada, you find an area, affectionately known by the City's residents, as Heart Lake.
This section of Brampton took it's name from the large and popular conservation area that is found there, but right now, the area residents are showing a lot of heart and spunk to preserve their neighbourhood.

You see, since its inception the Heart Lake community has never housed a condominium high rise building, but that is set to change on a 10 acre vacant parcel of land at the corner of Conestoga Drive and Sandalwood Parkway.  The residents here have come to terms with the fact that a high rise will be built in their neighbourhood, what is concerning them, is the number of buildings, the size of those buildings and the increase in population they will bring and the traffic issues.

Currently the zoning is approved for no more than 419 units, not to exceed 20 storeys.
The developer's proposed plans however, is to construct 6 highrise towers and other buildings that will total 834 units. 4 buildings are scheduled to be 20 storeys, and the 2 other buildings to be 12 & 18 storeys as well as a 7 storey office building. The site does not border any single family homes, it is surrounded by library, police community centre, parks & a playing field, but this is not where the concern is.

The concern lies in that Conestoga Drive and Sandalwood Parkway is a feeder intersection that aids in funneling the traffic from this neighbourhood out into the City; put this added population into the mix in this area, and the traffic will bind and clog up, especially during peak hours.

The City of Brampton will be in court asking for an appeal from the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) July 14th, 2010
. In the meantime the concerned residents of Heart Lake are holding a peaceful protest rally on Sunday June 6th between 2 and 4 p.m.. They are asking for 2,500 vehicles to show up at that intersection of Conestoga and Sandalwood in Brampton, Ontario, Canada to demonstrate to the OMB, just what impact this number of units in one area will have.  The organizers of the rally are pleading for the demonstration to be a peaceful one, which it needs to be, to get the attention and understanding of the OMB.

The nearby Loafer's Lake Recreation Centre will be offering a Free Swim between 1 and 5 p.m., a kids craft room, babysitting room and cooling room to assist the families attending.

I grew up in Brampton.  When I go back now to visit, I can't believe how the city has grown.  Let's hope it is a peaceful protest.  BTW, I remember your names in real estate even back then.  You both were and still are a force to be reckoned with in the industry - congratulations on your many years of success!

Hi Al and Peggy,

Whenever I hear of a new development I can't help but cringe, thinking about more healthy trees being destroyed, wildlife having to look for yet another place to live.

I always think about futuristic movies where it's all dark and concrete, people living together like ants just one high rise after another, so high that hover cars are a necessity...

Al & Peggy, I hope this will be resolved for the Heartlake Community, Change isn't easy for people who grow accustomed to the ways things are and developers are always wanting to make change happen.

How the developer exceed the allowed stories, # of untis etc. I think if the area is zoned for that 419 number, than 419 it is. I usually come up on the side of the developer in these things, I believe that if you have an area that is already a density area, then use up as much of that space as possible. That is what prevents sprawl. I understand people do not like change but there has to be a happy medium, until people stop, well, making more people there is going to be growth and change. I watched as Santa Cruz California made mistake after in zoning issues and they are now paying the price. I could go on and on about this subject, however I will spare all and get down off my soap box now....

Wow, Al & Peggy.  I seem to remember a time when our office was the highest "high rise" in Heart Lake at all of three stories.  Do we really need 20 storey buildings in Heart Lake?

I feel for your community Al and Peggy.  Long Island is supposed to be Suburbia, surrounded by nature, trees and animals.  Unfortunately every year the towns and villages keep taking the land on LI and building condominiums everywhere and mini shopping centers! Long Island is starting to look like mini cities.  And now because of the economy and NY budget problem they want to close down hundreds of parks on Long Island and who knows what will happen. I hope your situation is resolved and the same with LI.  People are so focused on the money portion...I know I'm ranting..sorry :)  ~laura cerrano

This should be an interesting afternoon. Our plans are to attend and follow it through. Sounds like it may rain, but we will see!
