Stop The Highrises in Heart Lake, Brampton, Ontario, OMB Stuns The City of Brampton
The City of Brampton and citizens from the Heart Lake and surrounding areas met on Sunday June 6, 2010 in the afternoon in protest of the OMB (Ontario Municipal Board) decision to allow developers to construct several highrise buildings on a small parcel of land on the north west corner of Sandalwood Parkway and Conestoga Drive.
Thousands gathered to listen to Mayor Susan Fennell, Regional Councillor Paul Palleschi, City Councillor John Hutton and several others share their concerns if the OMB refuses to revise their decision. In the meantime the City of Brampton has a court date in July to appeal the OMB's decision.
There were long lines of people waiting to sign petitions, the day was a peaceful gathering with several different signs telling of the local citizens concerns.
Stay tuned, it is not over until the fat lady sings...

Al and Peggy,
It will be interesting to hear the outcome of this. Many places have height limits, and I think that is a wonderful compromise.
Al and Peggy, it is hard to accept change, especially change of this nature. I hope the right decisions are made.
Is she a soprano or an alto. I like alto's better. Seriously, it will be interesting to see if money has it's way...
Al & Peggy, as George said I hope the right decisions are made. Unfortunately big business too often wins out over the voice of the people. Money definitely talks!!
Go out there and use your influence guys. I think it's great that you can be advocates for citizens in your community.
Ron and Alexandra, this is exactly what the residents were saying. It isn't that the high rises are scheduled it is the density of people in such a small area.
It is George, what is truly the main issue, is that the City has the right and power to say what is built where. The Ontario Municipal Board is only to step in if something isn't following the plans. Unfortunately this time that isn't the case. The OMB is overuling the current approved zoning.
We think she will be a screeching soprano Michael! We think money has definitely been throwing its weight around
It is said Nick, its big business involved for sure here.
Well we tried Jenny to lend our support not that its worth much LOL! But what is going on is not right and the concern also is that this is only of area of a few in the works. Look out Oakville if the OMB can just over rule the City's voice wherever they want.
Al and Peggy,
The role of the OMB seems curious. There have been several rather peculiar decisions of late. You might think they would be reflective of the local community, but they are not.

Ala & Peggy - That's an interesting fight. I wonder who is controlling the OMB other than it's official members? Lower density in that area makes sense to me.
Al and Peggy, Keep your heads high and keep that peaceful protest going...If I was there I would join in :) ~laura cerrano
City Planning should to be what the majority wants and needs...I was just talking to my kids about this today....Here in our part of So Cal we don't have enough recreation for the kids.
We are completely toast here in Port Dalhousie. The OMB overruled our city council and approved a 20-storey condo in the heart of this 19th-century canal village. Nothing has happened following lengthy protests to both the Ministires Of Housing and Culture and a review by the OMB. They are completely blind and deaf to any opposition to the OMB: court action is the only viable recourse- one which St. Catharines (Port Dalhousie) failed to do. We are waiting for the wrecking ball to move in.
I moved to Port Dalhousie from Brampton four years ago, and I wish I could have transplanted some of Brampton's fighting spirit into this sleepy city of St. Catharines And they wonder why nothing ever happens here!

Al and Peggy - I don't know what it is about some developers, who see a body of water, and think, "Oh boy, lets build a highrise and block the view!" But it happens far too often. Add to the mix that elected officials often see tax dollars from highrise square feet, and allow it all to happen!
Al & Peggy, I wish that I could remember where this happened...I think it was in the northeast US, anyway an entire established community of elderly home owners was condemned to make way for a high rise community producing a higher tax base.
We have a little thing here called eminent domain where a government can seize private property for the "common good"...I think that leaves a rather wide interpretation. Of course the former owners must be compensated at fair market value...that's a little scary.
