This Left Us Totally At A Loss For Words.....Good Thing It Is Speechless Sunday!
They say you never know what goes on behind closed doors, well that includes sealed walls! This post could go on and on, about the benefits of maintenance and looking after your property in a timely fashion. It could also go on and on about when doing a job, do it right, never just put a band aid on it. But we'll leave that to our illustrious home inspectors here on Active Rain.
A small drip was noticed around the bottom of a toilet, hmmmm, was the toilet sweating or is there in fact a leak somewhere? Investigation proved there was a leak.
Well let's get to it and put in a new seal and tighten everything up. Nope, didn't even get that far, before it was discovered there was an issue with the toilet's shut off valve. This could be a long post, so we'll just cut right to the chase. The problem lead to opening up the ceiling underneath the affected toilet.
That's when we saw it, that's when we stood there gaping at what was revealed, that's when we went speechless, totally and utterly speechless.

Not likely any inspector would have found this mess.
Who could do such a thing? What were they doing? What were they thinking?

Hi Al and Peggy~ It is amazing the things that some people will do, isn't it?
Wow - what a disaster waiting to happen. No pride of ownership here.... Thanks for sharing. Thank goodness the problem was "investigated"!
Vickie, isn't it? Shut off valves between a floor and ceiling, what good where they?
Cara, we just couldn't believe our eyes, its a huge mess to repair now.
Oh, my. Not good, not good at all. Hmmm...
OH my goodness? Wow!! Your kidding me!! I can't believe my eyes!! What a mess to clean up correctly. I'm sure you were speechless.
Hi Al & Peggy, oh no, not good at all. Are you sure you weren't sputtering some words there? Yikes!
Al and Peggy, WOW. You asked what were they thinking? The answer is, they were not!
This is a nightmare waiting to happen.
No it isn't good William, do you know how much the real plumber is going to charge? That is if we can get him to stop laughing!
Honestly Lisa, we couldn't believe our eyes. We have no idea, what the guys plan with this was!
Andrea, we cut a small hole in the ceiling and said what's this, then a bit larger hole and well what's this and it just kept going like the energizer bunny! It was too funny to really get upset. Well this is before the final plumbers bill.
Oh ya George, a nightmare big time, the real problem is, it almost looks like water has been trickling between the upstairs flooring and downstairs ceiling for some time....glad we at least caught it now.
Al & Peggy,
Years ago we came across a home with a vacuum cleaner hose for a tub drain. The owner said it was only meant to be temporary, but he commented, "of course that was 8 years ago". : )
Steve
Al and Peggy,
I am speechless. Unbelievable!
Hi Al and Peggy - It sounds like a job and TV episode for Mike Holmes, eh?
P-f-f-ft, all in a day's work! I fail to see the problem here. I think that you need to give them an "A" for asinine...
Steve and Joel, well maybe that's what these people were thinking. Just tape this up and let me run to the store for parts and they must have kept on running!!
Crazy eh Gerry? Still scratching our heads.
EXACTLY what we thought of doing Marc!! He'd probably make a show out of it!
We were wondering what you would make of this Michael. No E for effort though.
Did these people really think that electrical tape would solve the problem here?
I'm with Michael on this one. They get an "A" for asinine!
Al and Peggy - That left me speechless alright. I had a buddy who used to jury rig stuff but his work was stellar compared to that.
Hi Al & Peggy,
We had a few surprises when we bought our side-split in Fergus five years ago.
The "sun room" was just a trailers added-room caulked onto the house (put together like a ginger-bread house), the pond was a large satellite dish wrapped in an old pool liner and duct taped, the hot water heating system had a leak so the previous owners just cut the pipe leading to two floors, and the foundation had a major leak....
$50,000.00 later we got the place repaired. Nothing surprises us anymore.
Duct tape would have at least been to code :)
Al & Peggy you know exactly what they were thinking. Plumber $50 per hour, tape $3.00 a roll and nobody will ever see it after we put in the ceiling. They have other problems with all of those water stains on the wood and joists as well.
Al & Peggy, I'm pretty much at a loss for words as well. It seems that we here in the good ole USA do not have the market cornered with dumb ideas. When I saw the electrical tape the first thing I thought was...should have used duct tape...ahhh great minds think alike!!!
My goodness. This really does take the cake. A perfect example of being penny wise and pound foolish. Anyone's grandmother could tell them they were making a BIG mistake!
I'm thinking this one should be handled by the court system, so these owners could be barred from living within 1000 feet of a hardware store - Maybe even D0-It-Yourself ankle bracelet monitors.
I love old houses. I love to inspect old houses, because you never know what you will find. The lead proves to me that you had a dandy here. Thanks for the pictures.
It's truly scary what some people will do to save money...lucky you didn't have sewage all over the place!
That is so horrible. I am afraid this type of cover up happens more often than one would think... since inspectors can't do destructive testing, it often is not discovered until the new owner has a disaster on their hands.
