Pay It Forward - Project Winter Survival For The Homeless
Project Winter Survival was founded 11 years ago by Jody Steinhaur. We are sure they couldn't use more help than they can today with these sub zero temperatures. In 2009 they made up 2500 packages for the homeless to guard against them freezing to death on the streets! As we snuggle beside a roaring fireplace with a steaming hot chocolate, we can't even begin to imagine what it is like out there in the elements with only a few blankets, worn out clothes and empty stomach.
We heard on the radio they need our help again this year. They need unused back packs, winter gloves, new insulated beverage cups with lids, blankets, pillows.
You can also donate money. 100% of the money donated will buy these much needed items and you will be issued a tax receipt from the Salvation Army. This year you can even do it through PayPal.
Donations can be dropped off: Take the 401 East (if driving from the west) or the 401 West (if driving from the east) to Keele Street Exit. Exit South. Get into the left lane. Go South to Lawrence Avenue West. Turn Left at the lights at Lawrence. Go East to Caledonia. Turn Right on Caledonia.Go South on Caledonia for approximately 1-1/2 blocks. When you see the Canadian flag you are there, 890 Caledonia is on your right hand side, with lots of free parking or mail to Bargain's Group 890 Caledonia Road, Toronto, Ontario. M6B 3Y1 or you can even call 416-785-5655.

We are so fortunate here in my tiny town, that we don't have any homeless. We do have many many families in need of the Food Bank though which I support whole heartedly. We all need to give as much as we can. Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for reminding all of us how good we all have it and how difficult it is for the homeless to just exist. It really bothers me that a significant portion of our homeless population are women and children and Vets. Thanks for the post as we all need to think about how we can try to help these poor souls!!!

This is an excellent suggestion. It's one thing to be home in July, and quite another to be homeless in January.

Excellent post! Our church has their new ministry open up to serve the homeless on Wednesday's as threre were no lunches served prior to this on Wednesdays! it is to cold for them to be outside! We don't have many but it is growing every week!!!
We have so many homeless people here that we actually do a head count each January. I think it’s this coming Thursday. I can’t imagine being homeless, much less in a colder place like Toronto.

Al and Peggy it is a scary thought to be homeless, and it is a situation that we can find ourselves in much quicker that we think. Money given to these organizations is money well used.

Yes, we do Bob, and yes we do have it good. Not taking anything away from any one on the streets but for us, the Vets definitely should not be out there. They supported our countries and our countries need and should support them!
Oh absolutely Brian, it is quite brutal out there right now and we can't bare to be out there for longer than 20 minutes can you imagine 20 hours or more?

It is sad Anita. We do hear however, that sometimes it is hard to get the homeless to come indoors. Something about they are afraid to lose their spot on the street.

Suesan, we have always backed the Salvation Army in our family. Our Grandmother has always told us how they were the ones to help when she first arrived in this country from England, so we have always given back.
The rescue missions down here are overwhelmed with homeless and the push is on to raise more money to feed and shelter them. These are always great causes...

In New York the homeless population is decreasing...
Like we said Michael, we can't even begin to think how it feels to out on the streets in this weather! Frightening!

Al and Peggy, thanks for the reminder... it is too easy in this world we now live in to forget about the people... when you choose to see a homeless person, any person as a real person, then everything changes, especially how you treat them and what you will do for them.
