Al and Peggy's Corner: It's Only 25 Cents, Why Not Pay It Forward

It's Only 25 Cents, Why Not Pay It Forward

It's Only 25 Cents, Why Not Pay It Forward

How many times have you gone grocery shopping where they want you to put 25 cents to use the cart?
We all know its to ensure we put the carts back and that's okay.

Sometimes people walk up and hand you the 25 cents as your tucking the cart back in its row, to save you and them the hassle.
The other day when we were shopping that very thing happened, but instead of taking the 25 cents from the lady, we just gave her the cart with a smile instead and said "just give the cart to someone else when your finished". cartoon lady with shopping cart

It wasn't much, you can't hardly buy anything with a quarter anymore, but her smile was worth so much more.
We wondered how many people paid that cart forward, we hope it went on all day.

We heard it said once, "the smallest of gesture is worth more than the grandest intention".
We believe that.

That is so true.  Too bad more people do not pay it forward.  Thanks for the reminder and have a great day!

That's always nice to experience.  Especially with a smile.  Have a blessed Easter.

I have only seen pay for carts at airports, here in Texas we don't have to pay to use a shopping cart.  That is crazy. Maybe we already pay it forward for not having to pay in the first place.

Al & Peggy, It's the thought, not the dollar amount, that counts on that one, and makes someone's day!  Nice touch!  Fortunately that money for carts things hasn't spread here!

That was a nice gesture but I was amazed that you have to pay 25 cents for a cart, probably not a bad idea, they float all over the parking lots here.

Al and Peggy,

I really like the gesture but I'm keeping really quiet about this, since we don't pay for the cart use around here...yet.

Al & Peggy, we haven't started that program here yet, but that was a nice thing you did...

I was in a Subway sandwich shop last week and there was a couple who were short about 20 cents for their meal.  Without thinking about it I handed the cashier the change for them and they acted as though it was expected!!!  No thank acknowledgement at all.  I don't do things or try to help others on the condition of a thank you, but I thought their attitude was just a little left of big deal just an odd moment during the day.

Al and Peggy it is the little things that sometimes mean the most.

Now for the charging for the shopping cart thing.  I have not seen that in Connecticut yet, and I don't think it would go over to big.  So lets keep the idea North of the Border OK :)

Great idea Peggy & Al - I've never been to a grocery store where you had to pay for a buggy.  Wow....that hasn't hit our area (and I sorta hope it doesn't).   I teach my children to return the cart to the corral or, give the cart to someone walking into the store.  We always try to take someones cart into the store when they are unloading.  Same concept, sans the quarter.  Great post.

Is that a Canadian thing? I’ve never seen a store anywhere here or in the other states where I’ve lived that wanted you to pay to use the grocery cart. That just doesn’t make sense. I would think that the store would be happy that people come in to shop without nickle and diming quartering them like that.

Your welcome Kelly, sometimes the smallest thing can make a huge difference.

You too cousin Ken! All the best!

That's funny Suzanne, we thought it was everywhere. All you do is put a quarter in the cart slot and it releases the cart. You do your shopping and when you put the cart back it gives you your quarter back. Stops people from leaving the carts all over the parking lot.

BLiz, we didn't know that was a Canadian thing! LOL!

Peter and Linda, we are noticing it IS the small things people seem to appreciate the most!

It works Liz, but have to admit it is pretty frustrating when you don't have loose change!!

It's ok Rich, they give that quarter back after you put the cart back, but like we said its pretty annoying if you don't have a quarter when you go there!

Wanda, the certain stores that use this system don't have to pay for the guys to go clean up the parking lots.

Happy Easter Fred. Looks like inflation hit Vancouver!!

It doesn't take much does it Ellen?

That is unbelievable Nick! No, we don't do things for the thank you either, but geesh, they could have at least given you a smile.  We don't think that couple will be paying it forward. Sadly they missed the point!

Ok George! It's our secret! Happy Easter!

Caroline, it works the same. Just being thoughtful and nice ;)

LOL! You are right Russel. Guess their idea is that they keep the cost down by not having to pay an employee to retrieve the carts or the cost of replacing the damaged carts. Happy Easter.

We dont' have those types of carts in Idaho but in Illinois at the Aldi's stores they have that!   it is a good idea....I think they charge a tiny bit for bags as well and if you bring your own they dont' charge you!

All & Peggy - I love this one!  Thoughtful and it must have made the other person smile, feel good, and hopefully pass it along to someone else!

Deborah, yes we are now paying for our bags at the stores up here. They told us it was to protect the environment and encourage you to use reusable bags. We thought if it truly was they wouldn't even let us pay for those plastic bags!

We hoped that old cart got passed on all day Barbara!

Hey guys, we don't have those return sites, which explains why so many carts go flying around the lots banging into cars. A simple gesture to give someone else a great start to their day.
