December Seasons of Celebration & Sharing - Teaching The Young

Helping the less fortunate has always been one of our passions. When we had our own office in a shopping mall, every year we ran a toy drive and the goal was to fill an office with toys and barrels with food.

Picking a toy out for the toy driveis year, the goal was to teach the grand kids about helping others. With that in mind, along with their Dad, we headed to the toy store and asked them to pick out some toys, ones that they would like to have, so they could donate them.

At first it was a challenge, they did not understand the concept at all and wondered if we could just buy doubles so they could have them too! We told them "no", this was all about the those that are in need of our help. (Being sharp grandparents though, this was also our way of finding out what they really wanted). We then escorted them to the toy collection boxes and had them drop the toys off, while telling them they had helped make a child's Christmas morning special.

Picking out a toy for the toy driveNext up, was the grocery store to choose food for those in need,
again with the same explanation to the boys. Sugared cereals and cookies, may not have been our choice, but this was their effort so we went along with their selections.

Wow, what a whirlwind attempt if you can imagine taking two young boys into a toy store, asking them to pick out toys on the most wanted list and telling them they weren't for them! Then to test their patience in a grocery store!

Shopping for the food bankWe did our best and hope the message registered
when we asked them to imagine Christmas morning with nothing, not even a special meal. Maybe that's why they choose the cookies!

Dear All and Peggy, You are to be applauded for teaching such valuable lessons in a loving and clear fashion.  Giving is better than receiving!

Al/Peggy...this is such a valuable lesson for your grandsons to learn.  When my girls were young we would take them on mission trips (orphanage in Germany, impoverished people in Poland, etc.) where they helped create special Christmas' for kids who literally had nearly nothing of their own.

Al and Peggy, this is what Christmas is all about.  Children seem to embrace this easily once they understand.  Good to see you enjoying this Christmas season

Al & Peggy - This is such a great lesson to teach the grand kids, I always try teaching my boys the same way, by example.

I like your method. I also like your deviousness in finding out what the little ones wanted for themselves for Christmas!

We hope we can remind them and teach them all year and next year they can purchase with their own dollars Deborah.

Lesley that was the plan, to teach them what a great feeling it is to give to others, we will remind them again on Christmas day what they have done.

Anita, that must have been a heartwarming experience! To see it all first hand!

Thanks Chris and we was a very tough lesson for the little ones.

We truly hope that John. We truly hope that.

They had never done this before Michelle but we thought it was great how they actually got into it, making sure they had the exact gift right.

Well Russel, the opportunity just presented itself, we had to grab it!

Thanks Ed and it will. Just can't explain to you how it feels.

You guys are awesome, we did similar things with our children when they were young, and they still remember it and plan on doing the same with their (out grandkids). Kids remember these lessons.
